Viam has announced a partnership with Universal Robots to expand its industrial automation solutions, integrating AI-powered robotics for manufacturing and marine applications.

Viam has announced a new partnership with Universal Robots to expand its industrial automation offerings, according to a press release. Universal Robots’ UR Series collaborative robots will serve as flagship hardware within Viam’s platform as the company introduces AI-driven solutions for manufacturing and marine industries.

The collaboration has produced an AI-powered robotic surfacing system designed to accelerate production processes, reduce delays, and improve consistency. In the marine sector, Viam’s robotic block sanding system automates fiberglass sanding, traditionally a labor-intensive task. The system, integrated with Universal Robots’ adaptable robotic arms, can handle a range of component sizes from small parts to large hulls.

Viam’s automation capabilities also extend to gelcoat and paint application, wood sanding, and polishing, targeting industries such as furniture, construction, and broader manufacturing. The company’s hardware-agnostic platform allows its software to operate across different robotic systems, offering flexibility for manufacturers. The new sanding solution is being showcased at Metstrade 2025 in Amsterdam following its presentation at IBEX 2025 in Tampa.
