Slovenia Begins Construction on New Data Center for Supercomputer

Slovenia has started building a new data center in Maribor, which will house a supercomputer and an AI factory, with an investment of €18 million.

The Republic of Slovenia has commenced construction on a new data center in Maribor, which will host a supercomputer and an 'AI factory'. The project involves an investment of €18 million and is expected to be completed by mid-2026. The facility will be operated by the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES).

The data center is part of an EU-sponsored initiative valued at €150 million, selected by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC) for funding. This will be Slovenia's second supercomputer, following the Vega HPC system, also located in Maribor.

The project will utilize clean energy from the Drava River and incorporate sustainability measures, such as using waste heat for the local district heating network and installing solar panels on the roof. Slovenia's Prime Minister, Robert Golob, highlighted the project's role in advancing the country's technological capabilities and sustainability efforts.
