Seagate Report Highlights AI's Impact on Data Center Sustainability

Seagate Technology's latest report emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to sustainability and cost in data centers as AI demands increase.

Seagate Technology has released its Decarbonizing Data report, highlighting the growing sustainability challenges faced by data centers as AI demands increase. The report, based on a commissioned survey, reveals that energy usage is a top concern for 53.5% of business leaders, with global power demand from data centers expected to rise by 165% by 2030, announced in a press release.

The report identifies key barriers to sustainability, including high energy consumption, raw material requirements, and infrastructure costs. Despite 95% of respondents expressing concern about environmental impact, only 3.3% prioritize it in purchasing decisions. Seagate emphasizes the need for a unified sustainability approach, suggesting that technological innovation, life cycle extension, and shared accountability across the ecosystem are crucial for reducing emissions.

Seagate's report outlines three strategic pillars for a sustainable data future: technological innovation, commitment to life cycle extension, and shared accountability. The company highlights its HAMR-based Mozaic 3+ platform, which offers increased capacity and reduced carbon footprint, as an example of innovation driving sustainability in data centers.
