Proton Launches Lumo 2.0 with New AI Models and Privacy Upgrades
Swiss technology company Proton has introduced Lumo by Proton 2.0, a major update to its privacy-focused AI assistant. The release rebuilds the service on a new architecture, focusing on combining advanced AI performance with strong privacy protection.
Lumo 2.0 adds two new reasoning models: Lumo 2.0 Max and Lumo 2.0 Lite. The flagship Max model scores over twice as high on Proton’s internal benchmark index compared to the previous release, and user testing showed similar response quality to leading commercial models. The assistant now offers two response modes, Fast and Thinking, balancing speed and deeper reasoning.
The update also adds image generation and analysis, user-controlled encrypted memory, and improved web search with cited sources. Users can now organize content through Projects and create custom versions of the assistant called Custom Lumos.
Proton has also launched Lumo for Business, designed for organizations managing confidential information. Conversations in this tier remain encrypted, unlogged, and excluded from training data. Business users gain centralized controls and data storage on Proton’s independent European infrastructure.
Lumo 2.0 is available on the web, iOS, and Android. A free tier includes core functions, with paid plans offering unlimited chats, advanced features, and collaboration tools. Proton’s codebase remains fully open source for public verification.
