Pentagon Issues AI Procurement Guidance on Ideological Neutrality
The U.S. Department of Defense issued new guidance requiring AI procurements to follow Trump administration principles on factual accuracy and ideological neutrality, according to DefenseScoop. An Oct. 20 memorandum says compliance with the White House directives is mandatory.
The guidance includes templates for selecting transparency requirements, requesting compliance documents from vendors and adding formal terms to solicitations and contracts. Defense organizations can adapt the language based on the context and risk of each AI purchase.
For large language model purchases, contractors must provide enough information for the Pentagon to assess compliance. The executive order requires models to prioritize historical accuracy, scientific inquiry and objectivity, while acknowledging uncertainty when reliable information is incomplete or contradictory.
