OpenAI Reports 'Staggering' Demand for AWS Partnership, Cites Microsoft Limits
OpenAI is seeing strong enterprise interest in its forthcoming joint product with Amazon Web Services, according to The Information. In an internal memo to staff, Denise Dresser, the company's chief revenue officer, said demand for the AWS-based offering has been “staggering,” while noting that OpenAI’s exclusive cloud arrangement with Microsoft Corporation has restricted its ability to serve customers using other platforms.
Microsoft remains the exclusive host for OpenAI’s core APIs on Azure and continues to share in revenue from OpenAI’s partnerships. However, the new AWS collaboration, announced in February as part of a $50 billion investment and multi-year cloud deal, will make OpenAI’s tools available on Amazon’s infrastructure. The product will let enterprises build AI agents using OpenAI models running on AWS rather than selling the models directly.
The memo also noted that the new AWS product has raised concerns among senior Microsoft executives about potential conflicts with existing contracts. OpenAI and Microsoft’s partnership remains active, and both companies continue to collaborate on AI initiatives even as OpenAI expands its cloud footprint.
