OpenAI Plans to Buy Google's AI Chips, The Information Reports

Oct 28, 2026
OpenAI, one of Nvidia's largest customers, plans to buy Google's TPUs, according to The Information.

OpenAI plans to buy AI chips from Google, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter, according to Reuters. The report gave no financial terms.

OpenAI is one of the largest buyers of NVIDIA's GPUs, which it uses to train models and run inference. Reuters reported in June 2025 that OpenAI had begun renting Google's chips. A purchase would deepen that relationship.

Google's Tensor Processing Units have gained traction as a cheaper alternative to Nvidia's chips, and Google began selling them directly to some customers this year. OpenAI declined to comment, and Google did not immediately respond to Reuters.
