OpenAI Plans to Offer AI Cloud Services

November 10, 2025
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company is exploring ways to sell its own computing capacity directly to businesses and individuals, signaling plans to launch an AI-focused cloud service that could compete with Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has indicated that the company is preparing to offer its own cloud computing services tailored for artificial intelligence workloads. In a recent post, Altman said OpenAI is exploring ways to sell computing capacity directly to other companies and individuals, adding that the world will need a significant amount of "AI cloud."

The move would position OpenAI as a competitor to established providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The company has committed to spending over one trillion dollars on data centers and hardware to support its AI models, including large-scale systems used for services like ChatGPT. Selling compute capacity could help offset these infrastructure costs and create a new revenue stream.

OpenAI has recently restructured its cloud partnerships, ending exclusive reliance on Microsoft and signing major supply agreements with Amazon, Oracle, and other providers. The company is also building its own supercomputing facilities under a project known as Stargate, which includes new data centers in Texas and other locations.

Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar has previously stated that OpenAI intends to expand its in-house computing capabilities. Once sufficient infrastructure is in place, the company could begin offering first-party AI cloud services, marking a shift from being a major cloud customer to becoming a provider itself.
