OpenAI Considers Legal Action Against Apple Over ChatGPT Integration
OpenAI is weighing possible legal action against Apple Inc. after growing dissatisfied with the performance of their ChatGPT integration, reports Bloomberg. The company has hired an outside law firm to evaluate its options, which could include sending Apple a breach of contract notice while still seeking to resolve the dispute without a lawsuit.
The partnership, announced at Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, brought ChatGPT into Apple’s ecosystem through Siri and Visual Intelligence features. OpenAI expected the deal to drive significant subscriber growth and visibility, but executives now argue that Apple has not sufficiently promoted the integration and that its features are difficult for users to locate.
Apple reportedly has its own concerns, including questions about OpenAI’s privacy practices and frustration over the startup’s move into hardware led by former Apple executives. OpenAI’s leadership believes Apple’s limited rollout and lack of promotion have hurt both revenue and brand perception.
Any formal legal action is unlikely to proceed until after the conclusion of OpenAI’s ongoing trial with Elon Musk. The company is still hoping to reach an agreement with Apple outside of court as Apple prepares to open its platforms to additional AI providers later this year.
