OpenAI in Talks with Amazon for $10 Billion Investment and Chip Partnership
OpenAI is in discussions with Amazon about a potential investment that could exceed $10 billion and include an agreement to use Amazon’s artificial intelligence chips, reports CNBC. The talks are preliminary and subject to change.
The negotiations follow OpenAI’s corporate restructuring completed in October, which gave the company more flexibility to raise funds and partner with multiple technology providers. Microsoft, a major backer with more than $13 billion invested, no longer holds exclusive rights to provide OpenAI’s computing infrastructure.
Amazon Web Services has been developing its own AI chips, including the Trainium and Inferentia series, to support companies training and deploying large-scale models. The e-commerce and cloud company has already invested over $8 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic and could be seeking to expand its role in the AI ecosystem.
OpenAI has recently made over $1.4 trillion in infrastructure commitments, including a $38 billion agreement with Amazon Web Services for cloud capacity. The company was last valued at $500 billion in a secondary share sale finalized in October.
