Nvidia May Guarantee OpenAI’s Data Center Loans

October 23, 2025
Nvidia is reportedly in talks to guarantee some of the loans OpenAI plans to take out for building its data centers, according to The Wall Street Journal. The potential deal is part of a broader $100 billion partnership between the two companies.

According to The Information, Nvidia is in talks to guarantee some of the loans that OpenAI plans to take out to finance the construction of its own data centers. The arrangement, reported by the Wall Street Journal, could expose Nvidia to substantial debt obligations if OpenAI fails to repay the loans.

The loan guarantee discussions are part of a wider partnership under which OpenAI will lease Nvidia’s chips instead of purchasing them outright. As part of this agreement, Nvidia has committed up to $100 billion to support OpenAI’s data center expansion, beginning with a $10 billion cash contribution next year.

The two companies announced their data center collaboration in September, which involves deploying 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems. The partnership was revived earlier this year after reports that OpenAI had begun using Google’s AI chips prompted renewed talks between Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

OpenAI has also pursued additional hardware partnerships, including agreements with AMD and Broadcom, to diversify its computing resources. Nvidia, meanwhile, continues to invest in AI infrastructure projects and cloud providers to bolster demand for its GPUs.
