Microsoft Unveils GitHub Copilot AI Agent for Coding Tasks
Microsoft's GitHub has introduced a new AI agent for its GitHub Copilot, designed to assist developers with specific programming tasks such as fixing bugs and rewriting code. Announced at Microsoft's Build developer conference, the Copilot AI agent allows developers to assign tasks directly to it, which it then completes and submits for review. This feature aims to integrate AI more naturally into software development workflows.
The Copilot AI agent excels at handling low-to-medium complexity tasks in well-tested codebases, including adding features, extending tests, refactoring code, and improving documentation. It operates by creating a secure development environment using GitHub Actions, and its work is submitted as a pull request for human review, ensuring that existing security protocols are maintained.
The new coding agent is available in preview for developers with Copilot Pro+ subscriptions and organizations using the Copilot Enterprise service tier. This move is part of GitHub's strategy to enhance its developer tools and distinguish itself from competitors like Atlassian and GitLab. The agent is powered by Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model, providing advanced capabilities for code maintenance and development.
