The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has launched its Institute of Foundation Models (IFM), which includes a new AI lab in Silicon Valley, according to a press release. This expansion adds to MBZUAI's existing facilities in Paris and Abu Dhabi, creating a global research network.

The new lab in Sunnyvale, California, aims to connect MBZUAI with the vibrant AI ecosystem in Silicon Valley, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange with leading institutions and tech companies. The launch event, held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, highlighted the university's commitment to advancing AI foundation models.

MBZUAI's IFM is focused on developing advanced AI systems, including the PAN world model, which integrates multimodal inputs for comprehensive simulations and decision-making. The lab is also working on two flagship AI systems, K2 and JAIS, to enhance reasoning capabilities and support Arabic language models.

The university emphasizes transparency in AI development, offering open-source access to models and development processes through its LLM360 initiative. This approach aims to balance openness with research integrity, supported by international advisory boards and peer review processes.
