Google Leads in AI Patent Filings, Surpassing IBM

Google has overtaken IBM to become the leader in generative AI-related patents, according to data from IFI Claims shared with Axios. The data reveals that Google also leads in the emerging field of agentic AI, with significant patent filings in the United States.

The surge in AI-related patent applications indicates a growing interest in protecting AI technologies. In the U.S., generative AI patent applications have increased by 56% over the past year, reaching 51,487, while granted patents rose by 32%. Generative AI now accounts for 17% of all AI-related filings in the U.S., with agentic AI making up 7%.

Globally, Google and Nvidia are at the forefront of agentic AI patent filings, with three Chinese universities also making the top 10, highlighting China's competitive presence in the field. In the global rankings for generative AI, Google remains the leader, with Chinese companies and universities securing six of the top ten positions.
