Google Invests $17 Billion in First Wyoming Data Center
Google will invest $17 billion in its first Wyoming data center, the company announced on its website. The project involves partnerships with Tallgrass, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power, Related Digital and Bloom Energy.
American Electric Power is contracted to develop 702 MW of fuel cells that will convert natural gas into electricity. The project will pair the fuel cells with carbon capture and storage at Tallgrass's Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub. Google is also studying whether carbon capture technology can be added to combined-cycle turbines operated by Tallgrass.
The data center will use air cooling to limit water consumption. Google says it will pay for all electricity it uses and cover infrastructure costs directly caused by the project. The company expects the facility to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in property taxes for Laramie County and its school district.
