Google Updates Gemini with Mental Health Support Features and $30 Million Crisis Funding

Google has announced new updates to its mental health initiatives, including enhancements to Gemini by Google and a $30 million global funding commitment to crisis helplines over the next three years. The updates are designed to improve how users in need can access immediate mental health support.

When Gemini detects that a conversation may indicate distress or a potential crisis, it will now display a redesigned “Help is available” module developed with clinical experts. This feature enables direct access to crisis hotline resources through chat, call, text, or web links, with the option to seek professional help remaining visible throughout the interaction.

Through Google.org, the company is also expanding its support for crisis helplines and training organizations. This includes $4 million in direct funding and the integration of Gemini into ReflexAI’s training tools. Google.org Fellows will contribute technical expertise to improve Prepare, a simulation platform for training staff and volunteers in handling critical conversations.

Gemini has also been trained to recognize signs of acute mental health situations and respond by directing users to real-world assistance rather than attempting to provide therapy. Additional protections for minors prevent the AI from simulating companionship or expressing emotional dependence, as well as guardrails to avoid harmful interactions such as bullying.

These updates reflect ongoing efforts to ensure that Gemini provides safe, clinically informed responses and connects users with appropriate human support when needed.
