OpenAI and Anthropic Warn of AI Cyberattack Risk
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and other signatories warned in an open letter Thursday that organizations have a limited window to strengthen defenses against AI enabled cyberattacks, CBS News reports.
The letter says powerful AI tools may soon be used for more sophisticated attacks against companies, hospitals and other institutions. It says long standing software bugs, excessive permissions, misconfigurations, weak authentication, unpatched systems and older technology have left many systems exposed.
The signatories called on organizations to make cybersecurity a leadership priority, fix their highest risk weaknesses and raise standards for software they buy, build and deploy, including AI generated code. They also called on cybersecurity firms to test defenses, share threat intelligence and create tools for critical infrastructure operators.
The letter also said governments should coordinate cyber defense at local, national and international levels and fund defensive work. It said leading AI companies should provide access to response models during major cyber incidents, along with funding, training and hands on support for defenders.
