ECRI Expands Reporting Network for AI Errors in Patient Care
ECRI has expanded its Problem Reporting Network to collect and investigate incidents involving AI tools and AI enabled devices used in patient care, the organization said in a press release.
The expanded channel covers suspected incorrect outputs, unsafe AI behavior, malfunctions, errors, and near misses encountered in clinical or operational use. ECRI said healthcare providers, health systems, and clinicians can submit reports when an AI enabled tool may have contributed to an error or introduced risk in care delivery.
ECRI triages and investigates each submission through clinical and engineering experts, then shares findings with the submitter. The reporting network has operated since 1972 as a free, confidential channel for medical device and technology problems.
The program complements the ECRI and ISMP Patient Safety Organization, which has collected and analyzed more than 8 million safety event reports from healthcare providers nationwide.
