GitHub has launched the GPT-4o Copilot code completion model in public preview for VS Code users, announced on their website. This new model, based on GPT-4o mini, has been trained on over 275,000 high-quality public repositories across more than 30 popular programming languages, promising improved accuracy and performance.

To start using GPT-4o Copilot in VS Code, users can navigate to the Copilot menu in the VS Code title bar and select 'Configure Code Completions' followed by 'Change Completions Model'. Alternatively, the Command Palette can be used to change the completions model.

For Copilot Business or Enterprise users, administrators must enable this model by opting into Editor preview features in the Copilot policy settings on GitHub. Free users should note that using this model will count toward their 2,000 free monthly completions. The model will soon be available to Copilot users in all JetBrains IDEs.
