Deloitte Warns Health Sector Could Lose $168 Billion Without Meeting Consumer Demands
The Deloitte 2026 Life Sciences and Health Care Industry Outlook warns that U.S. health systems and biopharma companies could lose a combined $168 billion over the next decade if they fail to meet consumer expectations, announced in a press release.
The analysis, based on data from the Komodo Healthcare Map, estimates potential losses of up to $54.5 billion for health systems that do not expand virtual health options and $114.1 billion for biopharma companies that continue to rely on third-party distribution channels. The report identifies a widening gap between consumer priorities—convenience, affordability, and accessibility—and executive focus areas.
Nearly half of surveyed consumers said they already use generative AI for health-related purposes, yet only 15% of industry executives reported that their organizations had updated governance structures to keep up with technological change. Deloitte found that 48% of executives said their boards lacked representation in AI and data science expertise.
The report also highlights a trust deficit, with only 13% of consumers viewing biopharma companies as reliable sources of information on treatments. According to Deloitte’s analysis of HundredX data, organizations with high trust levels have 2.5 times greater customer loyalty compared to those with low trust.
