China Meteorological Administration Launches AI Arctic Routing Service

A new Arctic routing service uses AI, satellite data and numerical forecasting to provide sea ice forecasts and monitor polar cyclones.

The eighth Silk Road Maritime International Cooperation Forum launched an Arctic route meteorological routing service developed by the China Meteorological Administration and the Silk Road Maritime Association, according to a press release. The service uses Fengyun meteorological satellites, numerical forecasting and AI to predict sea ice conditions 15 days ahead and monitor polar cyclones.

Fujian Provincial Port Group also presented an AI powered meteorological risk system covering 58 ports in China and other countries. The system provides weather risk information for port and shipping operations.

The forum also launched 12 maritime routes and a sea rail corridor between Hunan and Fujian. Organizers expect the corridor to reduce logistics costs by 20% to 30% and shorten transport times by five to seven days.
