Anthropic Challenges US Proposal to Block Google Investments
Anthropic has filed a motion in federal court to oppose a US government proposal that seeks to block Alphabet Inc.'s Google from investing in AI startups, according to Bloomberg. The proposal is part of a broader antitrust case against Google, which aims to address the company's alleged monopolization of the online search market.
The proposed remedy would require Google to terminate its relationship with Anthropic, which has received approximately $3 billion in funding from the tech giant. Anthropic argues that this move would not only harm the company but also negatively impact competition in the AI sector, potentially benefiting larger rivals like OpenAI and Meta Platforms Inc.
The US Department of Justice and several states have suggested significant changes to Google's business operations, including the forced sale of its Chrome web browser. The proposal also seeks to prevent Google from acquiring, investing in, or collaborating with companies that control consumer search information, including those involved in AI products.
Anthropic, known for its Claude family of large language models, contends that the proposed changes would provide an unfair advantage to its larger competitors, including Google's own DeepMind subsidiary. The US Federal Trade Commission has also expressed concerns about major tech firms' investments in AI startups, warning of potential data consolidation in areas such as chip development and data center infrastructure. We hope you enjoyed this article
