Anthropic buys 1.7 GW of gas-fired generator orders for $3.4 billion

Nov 8, 2026
Anthropic took over OnePWR Solutions orders for Caterpillar gas-fired generators in late September, the FT reports, in the largest known power-equipment purchase by an AI lab.

Anthropic bought commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty gas-fired generators from OnePWR Solutions for $3.4 billion in late September, according to the Financial Times. The FT calls it the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI lab. The deal also covers the engineering and construction capabilities needed to install the generators.

OnePWR, an equipment supplier based in San Antonio, Texas, had ordered the generators from Caterpillar two years earlier but needed financing to complete the purchase. Anthropic first planned to become a OnePWR customer, then took over the equipment orders instead. It did not acquire OnePWR, and no OnePWR employees moved to Anthropic, a person familiar with the matter told the FT.

The engines were ordered before prices surged and are available in the near term and over the next two years, FourWeekMBA reports from the FT article. The report does not say where the generators will be installed. OnePWR and Anthropic declined to comment. The FT contrasts the deal with xAI's $2 billion purchase of mobile gas turbines earlier this year. Reuters also carried the FT report. The deal comes as Anthropic prepares for its IPO.
