UK Renames AI Safety Institute to AI Security Institute, Partners with Anthropic
The UK government has announced a significant shift in its approach to artificial intelligence by renaming the AI Safety Institute to the AI Security Institute. This change reflects a new focus on addressing security risks associated with AI, such as its potential use in cyber-attacks and other crimes. The rebranded institute will work closely with the Home Office and other government departments to research and mitigate these risks.
In conjunction with this rebranding, the UK has signed a memorandum of understanding with AI company Anthropic. This partnership aims to explore the use of Anthropic's AI assistant, Claude, in enhancing public services. The collaboration will focus on improving how citizens interact with government information and services, potentially leading to more efficient and accessible public services.
Anthropic, backed by major tech companies like Google and Amazon, will also contribute to scientific research and economic modeling as part of this agreement. The UK government views this partnership as a step towards becoming a leader in AI innovation, aligning with its broader Plan for Change to modernize the economy through technology.
The AI Security Institute will also establish a new criminal misuse team to address illegal uses of AI, such as the creation of explicit images of children. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that AI development is both responsible and secure, safeguarding national security and public safety.
