Texas poll finds 79% support limits on data centers
A survey by the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs, published in its report "Texas Votes 2026 Data Centers and Artificial Intelligence", found that 79% of likely Texas voters support limiting the number of data centers in the state, according to the San Antonio Current. Another 99% said proposed data centers should pay for electric grid expansions needed to serve them.
Voters' top concerns include the effect of data centers on electricity prices and water supplies and the possibility of more frequent power outages. More than two thirds said they are extremely or very concerned about the centers' resource consumption. The survey also found that 65% believe artificial intelligence will cause more harm to society than good.
Governor Greg Abbott has paused approvals for connecting data centers to the grid and directed the Texas Water Development Board to require water use reports from operators while the state audits projects.
