Spain to Enforce Fines for Unlabeled AI-Generated Content
Spain's government has approved a bill that imposes significant fines on companies failing to label AI-generated content, . This move aligns with the European Union's AI Act, which emphasizes transparency and prohibits harmful AI practices.
The bill, which still requires approval from the lower house, categorizes the failure to label AI-generated content as a serious offense. Companies could face fines up to 35 million euros ($38.2 million) or 7% of their global annual turnover. The legislation also bans the use of subliminal techniques to manipulate vulnerable groups and restricts the classification of individuals based on biometric data.
A newly established AI supervisory agency, AESIA, will enforce these rules, except in cases involving data privacy, crime, elections, credit ratings, insurance, or capital markets, which will be overseen by respective watchdogs. This initiative positions Spain as one of the first EU countries to implement such comprehensive AI regulations.
