U.S. Government Considers Stake in Intel to Boost Domestic Manufacturing
The Trump administration is in discussions with Intel Corporation about the U.S. government potentially taking a stake in the company to support its domestic manufacturing efforts, according to Bloomberg. This move aims to assist Intel in expanding its U.S. manufacturing capabilities, particularly its delayed Ohio chip factory.
The discussions follow a meeting between President Donald Trump and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan on August 11. The potential deal would involve the U.S. government purchasing a stake in Intel, although the specifics are still being negotiated. Intel has not commented on the discussions but expressed its commitment to working with the Trump administration to strengthen U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to bolster domestic industries deemed critical for national security, especially in light of competition with China. The administration has previously engaged in similar interventions, such as taking a stake in MP Materials Corp. and securing a share of semiconductor sales to China.
