AI Avocado Certification Covers Most Mexican Exports to US

July 31, 2026
A voluntary certification program using satellite imagery, AI, and geospatial analysis now covers more than 90% of Mexican avocado exports to the U.S.

Climate Rights International said in a press release that a voluntary avocado certification program using satellite imagery, AI, and geospatial analysis now covers more than 90% of Mexican avocado exports to the U.S.

The Pro-Forest Agriculture program was established in 2024 by Guardián Forestal with the government of Michoacán. It helps retailers and suppliers screen avocado orchards and exclude fruit from land deforested since 2018 or from sites with unresolved environmental fines or administrative orders.

About 80 packinghouses, guacamole processors, and avocado oil producers in Mexico participate in the system. The monitoring program now covers more than 53,000 orchards across more than 200,000 hectares in six Mexican states with significant avocado production.

Climate Rights International said Calavo Growers, Fresh Del Monte Produce, Mission Produce, and West Pak Avocado now participate in the program. Costco committed in 2025 to encourage suppliers to join, and Sprouts Farmers Market announced in May 2026 that all avocados it sources from Mexico must come from suppliers certified under PFA.
