SK Hynix Projects 30% Annual Growth in AI Memory Market
SK hynix forecasts that the market for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) designed for artificial intelligence will grow 30% annually until 2030, according to Reuters. This optimistic projection comes despite concerns over rising price pressures in the sector.
Choi Joon-yong, head of HBM business planning at SK Hynix, noted that the demand for AI from end users remains strong. The company expects that the billions of dollars in AI capital spending projected by cloud computing giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet's Google will likely be revised upwards, which would positively impact the HBM market.
SK Hynix anticipates the custom HBM market to reach tens of billions of dollars by 2030. The company is currently the main HBM supplier to NVIDIA, with Samsung and Micron supplying smaller volumes. The strategic shift in the memory business involves technological changes in HBM production, including customer-specific logic dies, which make it challenging to replace a rival's product with an identical one.
