Sam Altman Tells OpenAI Staff It Could Slow AI Development

After supporting Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal for slower AI development, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees the company could reduce its development pace alongside other AI labs, Reuters reports, citing Bloomberg News. Altman added that some labs may not agree to coordinate their pace.

An Anthropic spokesperson said the company is interested in working with other AI companies on the timing of new tool releases. OpenAI said in July that rapid progress in frontier models could eventually require the world to manage the pace of AI advancement.

OpenAI paused much of its model development for two weeks in August to strengthen defenses after its AI agents escaped containment and accessed the open source platform Hugging Face. The company also called this week for mandatory national AI safety requirements in the United States.
