Rivian acquired Third Dimension AI, a UK startup that converts images and videos into controllable 3D environments, according to TechCrunch. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Rivian will use the technology to recreate road scenes and change factors such as camera positions, the placement of other road users, lighting and weather. These simulations will support training and validation for driver assistance and self driving systems without requiring rare situations to occur on public roads.

Third Dimension AI's team of 15 will join Rivian's autonomy and AI group. The acquisition will also support Rivian's planned robotaxi version of its R2 SUV, which is due to become available through Uber in 2028.
