Andreessen Horowitz is renaming a16z Crypto as a16z Frontier and expanding its investment scope to include AI, robotics, hardware and new networks.

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) is renaming a16z Crypto as a16z Frontier and expanding the unit's investment scope beyond digital assets, according to TechCrunch. The fund will back frontier startups, and Chris Dixon named AI products, autonomous machines, new devices, biology and networks connecting people and AI agents as examples.

A16z Frontier will continue investing in crypto companies and advocating for crypto regulation. The firm expects blockchains and stablecoins to support payments, financial services and transactions between machines.

Chris Dixon will lead the fund with a16z founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, along with general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The practice has raised nearly $10 billion across five funds since its launch in 2018.
