Perplexity Introduces API Model Context Protocol for Real-Time AI Search

Perplexity has launched the API Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling AI assistants like Claude to perform real-time web searches, enhancing their research capabilities.

Perplexity has launched its API Model Context Protocol (MCP), which provides AI assistants with real-time web search capabilities, according to the project's GitHub repository. This new protocol is integrated with the Sonar API, allowing AI models like Claude to deliver accurate insights on demand.

The MCP server implementation, known as Perplexity Ask, enables seamless interaction with the Sonar API for live web searches. Users can configure the system by cloning the MCP repository and setting up the necessary environment variables, including obtaining a Sonar API key. The setup involves configuring Claude Desktop to utilize the Perplexity Ask server, which can be done through Docker or NPX commands.

This development follows Perplexity's recent introduction of the Sonar API, which offers customizable AI search solutions for enterprises. The MCP aims to enhance the functionality of AI assistants by providing them with the ability to conduct comprehensive web-wide research in real-time.
