Pelagos Data Centres to Build 250MW Facility in Gibraltar
Pelagos Data Centres has unveiled plans for a new 250MW data centre near the Port of Gibraltar, announced in a press release. The facility, which will be constructed in five phases, is expected to attract an investment of approximately £1.8 billion and will be the largest development project in Gibraltar by value.
The first phase of the project is scheduled to become operational in late 2027, with subsequent phases following at 18-month intervals. The data centre will be powered independently of Gibraltar's existing power grid and will include a public leisure facility for the local community.
The project is expected to create up to 500 jobs during construction and around 100 permanent positions upon completion. It will be built to Tier III standards, ensuring high availability and reliability, and aims to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of approximately 1.2 or better, reflecting a commitment to energy efficiency.
Sustainability is a key focus, with plans to power the facility using a combination of renewable energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG), aiming for net-zero operational emissions by 2030. Advanced cooling systems will be employed to minimize water usage, and discussions are underway to repurpose heat from the data centre for community projects in Gibraltar.
