OpenAI has launched two new AI reasoning models, o3 and o4-mini, designed to enhance capabilities in math, coding, reasoning, science, and visual understanding. These models, announced on Thursday, are now available for subscribers to OpenAI's Pro, Plus, and Team plans. The o3 model is described as OpenAI's most advanced reasoning model to date, outperforming previous iterations on various benchmarks.

The o4-mini model offers a balance between price, speed, and performance, making it a competitive option for developers. Both models can generate responses using tools in ChatGPT, such as web browsing, Python code execution, and image processing. Additionally, a variant called o4-mini-high is available, which focuses on crafting more reliable answers.

These models are part of OpenAI's strategy to maintain a competitive edge in the global AI race against companies like Google and Meta. The o3 model achieves state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks such as Codeforces and SWE-bench, making 20% fewer errors than its predecessor, o1. Furthermore, these models can analyze images during their reasoning process, enhancing their ability to understand and manipulate visual data.

For developers, the models are accessible via OpenAI's developer-facing endpoints, the Chat Completions API and Responses API, allowing for application integration at usage-based rates. OpenAI plans to release an o3-pro version soon, which will utilize more computing resources for enhanced performance.
