OpenAI's Breakthroughs Make GPT-4 Rebuild Easier

OpenAI can now rebuild GPT-4 with just 5 to 10 people, thanks to advancements from GPT-4.5, as discussed by CEO Sam Altman.

OpenAI has announced that it can now rebuild its GPT-4 model with a significantly smaller team, thanks to advancements made with its latest model, GPT-4.5. Originally, constructing GPT-4 required hundreds of people, but the company now estimates that only five to ten individuals would be needed to retrain the model from scratch. This revelation was shared by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during a company podcast episode.

The improvements stem from the research and development efforts that went into GPT-4.5, which was launched in February as OpenAI's most powerful model to date. Alex Paino, who led the pretraining machine learning for GPT-4.5, highlighted that the retraining of a GPT-4-caliber model, known as GPT-4o, was achieved with a much smaller team, demonstrating the efficiency gains from the latest advancements.

OpenAI's focus on data efficiency and algorithmic innovations has been pivotal in reducing the resources needed for model training. Daniel Selsam, a researcher at OpenAI, emphasized that while computing power has traditionally been a limiting factor, the company is now exploring ways to extract more value from existing data, which remains a bottleneck.
