OpenAI has released two new open-weight language models, GPT-OSS-120b and GPT-OSS-20b, optimized for running on laptops. These models are designed to excel in advanced reasoning tasks and are available under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing for wide modification and commercial use. The larger model, GPT-OSS-120b, can run on a single GPU, while the smaller GPT-OSS-20b is capable of operating on a personal computer with just 16GB of memory announced on their website.

These models mark OpenAI's first open-weight release since GPT-2 in 2019. They are designed to be customizable and can be deployed on various platforms, including Hugging Face, Databricks, Azure, and AWS. The models are also compatible with OpenAI's existing APIs, enabling them to perform tasks such as web browsing, code writing, and operating agents. Safety has been a priority, with the models undergoing rigorous testing to ensure they do not pose cybersecurity or biological risks.
