Meta Platforms Inc. is making a significant investment in AI-powered humanoid robots, forming a new team within its Reality Labs division to develop robotics hardware and software, according to Bloomberg. The initiative aims to create robots capable of performing household tasks, with a broader ambition to establish a foundational platform for the robotics market.

The new robotics group will be led by Marc Whitten, former CEO of Cruise, and will focus on developing AI, sensors, and software for humanoid robots. Meta's approach is not to produce a Meta-branded robot initially but to provide the underlying technology for other manufacturers, similar to Google's Android in the smartphone industry reports TechCrunch.

Meta has already begun discussions with robotics companies like Unitree Robotics and Figure AI to explore potential partnerships for prototype development. The company plans to leverage its advancements in AI and augmented reality to enhance the capabilities of humanoid robots, particularly in adapting to varied home environments.

The initiative reflects Meta's strategic move to expand its portfolio in AI and robotics, with the company planning to invest $65 billion this year in related products, including AI infrastructure and the new robotics efforts. Despite the ambitious plans, widespread adoption of humanoid robots is still considered to be years away.
