AMD Unveils Helios AI Server with OpenAI Collaboration

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) has introduced its new Helios AI server, which will feature the MI400 series chips, at the Advancing AI event in San Jose. The server is designed to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI hardware market. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company will adopt AMD's latest chips, highlighting the collaboration between the two tech giants.

The Helios server, set to be released next year, will incorporate 72 of AMD's MI400 series chips, making it comparable to Nvidia's NVL72 servers. AMD's CEO Lisa Su emphasized that the server's networking standards will be openly available, fostering collaboration with competitors like Intel.

AMD's new rack-scale system, which allows thousands of chips to function as a single unit, is aimed at customers seeking hyperscale AI clusters. This development is part of AMD's strategy to compete with Nvidia by offering cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions. The MI400 series chips are expected to deliver significant performance improvements, with AMD claiming they will outperform Nvidia's offerings in terms of price and power consumption.
