xAI Launches Image Generation API with Grok-2-Image-1212 Model

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has introduced an image generation API featuring the Grok-2-Image-1212 model, allowing users to generate images from text prompts at $0.07 per image.

xAI has launched a new image generation API, featuring the Grok-2-Image-1212 model, according to TechCrunch. This API allows users to generate up to 10 images per request based on text prompts, with a pricing of $0.07 per image. The API currently supports up to five requests per second, providing images in JPG format.

The Grok-2-Image-1212 model positions xAI competitively in the market, with pricing between Black Forest Labs' $0.05 per image and Ideogram's $0.08 per image. However, the API does not yet support adjustments for image quality, size, or style, and prompts are subject to revision by a chat model.

This launch is part of xAI's broader strategy to expand its capabilities and revenue streams. The company is reportedly in discussions for a $10 billion funding round, aiming for a $75 billion valuation. Additionally, xAI has acquired a generative AI video startup and is expanding its data center in Memphis, indicating a focus on multimedia and future offerings beyond image generation.
