Vatn Systems Wins DIU Mine Countermeasure Challenge
Vatn Systems won the Defense Innovation Unit's Mine Counter Measure Modernization Prize Challenge, the company said in a press release. Its SIGURD autonomous underwater system competed in the Near Surface and Volume Mine Engage Test and Evaluation segment.
During testing, SIGURD autonomously detected, reacquired and neutralized mine threats under operational conditions. The system combines autonomous detection with terminal engagement and runs on Vatn's Skelmir S6 platform.
The Defense Innovation Unit opened the challenge in May 2026 to assess modular systems that can operate with limited communications and be deployed quickly. Vatn introduced SIGURD in July 2026 after configuring the Skelmir S6 as a dedicated mine countermeasure system.
