US Lawmakers Introduce Over 780 AI Bills in Early 2025
In the first two months of 2025, US lawmakers have introduced 781 AI-related bills, surpassing the total number of AI bills proposed in all of 2024, which stood at 743. This surge in legislative activity is tracked by an online tool maintained by consulting firm MultiState.
Some of the notable bills include Maryland's H.B. 1331, which regulates the development and use of high-risk AI in consequential decisions, Texas' expansive Texas Responsible AI Governance Act, and Massachusetts' HD 3750, which mandates healthcare insurance providers to disclose the use of AI in reviewing insurance claims.
The increase in AI legislation is largely due to the lack of comprehensive federal AI governance. While the Trump administration has signed an executive order promoting AI development free from ideological bias, it has not endorsed major congressional AI legislation.
