Tesla Sues Former Engineer and Startup Over AI Trade Secrets

Tesla has filed a lawsuit against former engineer Zhongjie Li and his startup Proception, Inc. for allegedly stealing trade secrets related to its Optimus humanoid robotics program.

Tesla has filed a lawsuit against former engineer Zhongjie "Jay" Li and his startup, Proception, Inc., for allegedly stealing trade secrets from its Optimus humanoid robotics program. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses Li of downloading sensitive design files, actuator specifications, and source code related to Tesla's robotic hand technology before leaving the company in September 2024.

According to the complaint, Li accessed and downloaded confidential information using personal devices, violating Tesla's mobile device policy. Less than a week after his departure, Li incorporated Proception, which has since claimed to have developed advanced humanoid robotic hands. Tesla argues that Proception's rapid progress is implausible without the use of its misappropriated trade secrets.

Tesla is seeking injunctive relief, including the return and destruction of all confidential information, as well as compensatory and punitive damages. The lawsuit highlights the increasing competition and legal battles in the AI and robotics sectors as companies strive to protect their proprietary technologies.
