Yoshua Bengio Launches LawZero for Safe AI Development

Yoshua Bengio has announced the launch of LawZero, a non-profit organization focused on developing safe-by-design AI systems. The initiative aims to address the risks associated with current AI models.

Yoshua Bengio, a leading figure in artificial intelligence research, has announced the launch of LawZero, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing safe-by-design AI systems. In a press release, Bengio emphasized the need for AI systems that prioritize safety over commercial interests, addressing concerns about the deceptive and self-preserving behaviors observed in current AI models.

LawZero aims to develop a new AI model called Scientist AI, which will focus on understanding the world rather than acting within it. This approach is intended to provide oversight for agentic AI systems and mitigate risks such as algorithmic bias and loss of human control. The organization has secured initial funding of $30 million and assembled a team of over 15 researchers to pioneer this new approach.

The initiative is supported by notable backers, including the Future of Life Institute, Jaan Tallinn, and Schmidt Sciences. LawZero's efforts will begin with demonstrating the effectiveness of its methodology, with the goal of gaining support from companies and governments to scale the project. Bengio's vision for LawZero is to create AI systems that act as a guardrail against harmful autonomous behaviors, ensuring AI development aligns with human safety and well-being.
