PwC and OpenAI Develop AI Native Finance Function
PwC announced an expanded collaboration with OpenAI to create what it calls the first AI native finance function at enterprise scale, according to a press release. The initiative combines agentic AI with human supervision to reshape how finance operations such as planning, forecasting, and reporting are performed.
The partners are building AI agents that manage core finance processes including procurement, payments, treasury, tax, and accounting close. A procurement agent is already being developed within OpenAI’s finance organization, with insights from that project expected to inform additional agents across financial workflows.
PwC and OpenAI aim to move finance functions from basic automation to an operating model where AI agents can execute complex work under human oversight. These agents will connect to enterprise systems through managed control points and reusable skills, enabling consistent and reliable outputs across finance tasks.
Finance professionals will remain responsible for oversight, governance, and continuous improvement of these agents. The collaboration also explores how domain experts can use OpenAI tools such as Codex and emerging product surfaces to create customized applications for accruals, reconciliations, and reporting without traditional software development cycles.
