PJM, Google, and Tapestry Collaborate on AI for Grid Efficiency
PJM Interconnection has announced a multiyear collaboration with Google and Tapestry to deploy AI-enhanced tools to streamline the process of connecting new generation resources to the electrical grid. This initiative aims to significantly reduce processing times for interconnection applications, addressing the growing demand for electricity across PJM's service area, which spans 13 states and Washington, D.C. announced in a press release.
The collaboration will leverage Google's Cloud and DeepMind technologies to develop AI tools that optimize PJM's generation interconnection process. Tapestry, described as a "moonshot for the electrical grid," will work closely with PJM to implement these tools, which are expected to enhance decision-making and expedite the integration of new energy resources.
PJM's Executive Vice President, Aftab Khan, emphasized the importance of innovation in meeting future grid demands, highlighting the role of AI in improving planning tools and reducing completion times for new service requests. This collaboration complements PJM's ongoing efforts to automate its planning processes and implement a reformed interconnection process initiated in July 2023.
