OpenAI Loses Bid to Block GemGPT Trademark in Singapore

Nov 3, 2026
Singapore authorities rejected OpenAI's five objections to the GemGPT trademark application, finding that the shared letters GPT were not enough to create likely confusion.

OpenAI lost its bid to stop a Singapore startup from registering the GemGPT trademark, The Straits Times reports. The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore rejected all five objections in an October 28 decision and awarded the startup S$10,000 in costs.

Porolis Technologies applied to register GemGPT for software that uses AI to assess gemstone grades, authenticity and treatments. The company said Gem refers to gemstones, while GPT describes its use of generative AI models. Its service does not use OpenAI models.

The tribunal found that OpenAI had not established that GPT alone identified its business when Porolis filed the application on May 22, 2023. It assessed ChatGPT and GemGPT as complete names and found that consumers were unlikely to assume the products came from the same or related businesses.
