OpenAI Introduces GPT-5.2 With Expanded Professional and Developer Capabilities

December 11, 2025
OpenAI has launched GPT-5.2, its latest AI model available to ChatGPT paid users and through its API. The model comes in three versions—Instant, Thinking, and Pro—offering improvements in reasoning, coding, and long-context understanding, as the company refocuses on core products amid competition from Google and Anthropic.

OpenAI has released GPT-5.2, its newest AI model designed to improve performance for both professional and developer use. The model is available to ChatGPT paid users and through the API in three variants: Instant, Thinking, and Pro. Instant focuses on speed for everyday tasks such as writing and translation, Thinking handles structured work like coding, math, and planning, and Pro delivers the highest accuracy for complex problems.

According to the company, GPT-5.2 shows measurable gains across reasoning, coding, and long-context understanding. Internal testing indicates a 38 percent reduction in factual errors compared to GPT-5.1. The Thinking version scored highest to date on OpenAI’s internal benchmarks simulating real-world professional tasks.

Executives said the model has been in development for months and benefits from a company-wide effort to prioritize ChatGPT improvements following internal concerns about competition from Google’s Gemini 3 platform. GPT-5.2’s rollout continues the company’s pattern of releasing models in rapid succession, following GPT-5 in August and GPT-5.1 in November.

In addition to technical upgrades, OpenAI said it is expanding safety measures for mental health-related interactions and beginning limited deployment of its age-prediction system to provide content protections for younger users. The company plans to introduce an “adult mode” for users over 18 in early 2026.
