Open Compute Project Foundation Launches 'Open Data Center for AI' Initiative

November 10, 2025
The Open Compute Project Foundation has launched the Open Data Center for AI Strategic Initiative to develop standardized infrastructure for high-density AI deployments, supported by Google, Meta, and Microsoft.

Open Compute Project Foundation has announced a new strategic effort called the Open Data Center for AI, expanding its Open Systems for AI program in a press release. The initiative focuses on standardizing data center infrastructure for high-density AI workloads, covering power, cooling, mechanical systems, and management telemetry.

The Open Data Center for AI initiative was developed in response to a growing number of infrastructure projects and workshops within the OCP community. It aims to establish shared requirements for AI data centers to allow flexible deployment of diverse AI systems while reducing design fragmentation and deployment delays.

The initiative is supported by major technology firms including Google, Meta, and Microsoft Research, which have co-signed an open letter inviting broader industry participation. By defining common standards, the effort seeks to help colocation and enterprise data centers accommodate a wider range of AI tenants with fewer custom configurations.

According to OCP CEO George Tchaparian, the program builds on the foundation’s ongoing work to develop open specifications and standards that address scalability and sustainability challenges in AI infrastructure.
