Retirement plan participants are open to using AI for portfolio tasks but want control over its decisions, Invesco said in a press release. The Summer 2026 survey, conducted with Ipsos, covered 517 US defined contribution plan participants employed by organizations with at least 1,000 workers.

Participants favored AI for portfolio monitoring, rebalancing and risk assessment, while preferring more human involvement in planning and goal setting. The ability to set limits on AI investment decisions was important to 97% of respondents, including 70% who considered it very important.

The survey also found interest in adding private markets to retirement plans. Among respondents, 65% expressed interest in a target date fund with a modest allocation to private markets. Participants showed interest in private lending, infrastructure, real estate and private equity.
